School’s Out (for a little while)

I’ve decided to not take any classes this semester. I realized earlier today that I’ve taken classes every semester since I’ve been in college (for a total of five). Yet I’ll be a third year freshman come fall because my credits from Centenary didn’t transfer. I anticipate a fight come fall, because according to new state law I should be considered a resident (having been here one year this week), but school policy still says three years. The tuition difference is around $2500 per semester. Quite a bit of savings.

Summer is also out because of the hassle of getting financial aid. I owe the college around $400 because they never awarded me the Academic Competitiveness Grant I was qualified for. I originally applied back in fall, but didn’t get it then because I dropped to half-time. Come spring, I was full-time and all my paperwork had been done since September. Somehow they lost it. I had to have my transcripts resent from Louisiana and re-fill out the other paperwork twice. They said it would be awarded in a couple of weeks. It wasn’t. Financial aid at the campus I was attending didn’t know anything and gave me a number to call. I ended up talking to several people who didn’t know anything and kept sending me to others who didn’t know anything either. After a couple of months of this, I gave up on it out of frustration.

Instead, I’m going to reteach myself the Spanish I learned in high school in preparation for taking an actual class in the fall while on the road this summer. Hurray for autodidactism.

In other news, I’m no longer a retail employee. By choice. I’m going to do some temp work until we leave in June. I’m going to the library later this evening to pick up a book on MSOffice to refresh on the things I learned in BCA a few years ago. Advanced functions and such.

That is bullshit. If the state says your a resident after a year you should get the tuition drop then, not when the college says you do. Good luck with that fight :-/.
