Candy, Coffee, and (a Lack of) Common Sense

I handed out candy for Halloween for the first time this year. Quite a few brats out and about. Got irritated and turned off the light before handing out all of the bags. Managed to get around 90 of the 100 out though. Never again. I only really did it this time for the novelty of it as I’ve never lived in a neighborhood that trick-or-treaters came to.

So, 7/11 is doing this poll thing where customers can choose to get their coffee in a blue cup if they support Obama, red for McCain, or white for undecided/other. According to this poll, Obama has a huge lead over McCain here in Utah. Unfortunately, the majority of people in this state don’t drink coffee, because the LDS church prohibits drinking hot beverages.

Anyway, it seems simple enough. It’s a very unscientific poll of coffee drinkers who patronize 7/11. However, there seems to be some confusion in a forum I follow sometimes. Several members thought that by choosing a cup, they really were casting their vote in the election! *sigh*

Strawberry pie

On impulse the other night, I bought a strawberry pie from the Village Inn without looking at it first as I hadn’t had one from anywhere in a long time and I remembered these to be rather good. I got home to find that it was basically a pile of strawberries on a graham cracker crust with a little bit of whipped cream around the edges. Twelve dollars plus tax for this. If only I’d known…

Recreating the strawberry pie:
Fresh strawberrries (1 LB): $2.00
Pie tin leftover from Marie Callender’s: $.50
Graham cracker crust leftover from a cheesecake mix: $.25
Off-brand “Cool Whip”: $.89
Total: $3.64

This is why impulse buys are bad. -.-

Criminal Mastermind

While exiting the local grocery store recently, the gate went off.  My companion and I stopped for a moment in case it was something of ours that wasn’t demagnetized. It wasn’t.  A guy ran by pushing a cart full of pizza, beer, and other assorted junk food.  Unfortunately for him, he did it at a time when there were quite a few staff members working and in the immediate vicinity.  Several employees from both the main store and in-store restaurant went running after him.  They didn’t catch him, but managed to retrieve the cart with all of its contents intact.  As amusing as it was, I feel kinda bad for the employee who had to shelve all of the nearly stolen goods…

An unscientific theory

After much field observation, I have come to a conclusion: college students have a subconscious tendency to travel in packs. Nobody approaches the circulation desk at this library for long periods of time. Every so often the invisible dam surrounding the desk bursts and patrons come flooding over. Separate, but together. This is a fairly regular event. There is insufficient anecdotal data at this time to determine why this happens, but I’m sure that I (or you…) will make up a ridiculous reason for why this happens. Personally, I think it has something to do with the rampant Myspace usage or faintly scented pheromones. Or both. Or none of the above.

Did you know that the Internet exists solely for looking at porn viewing the profiles of random chicks wanting a friends add which is the same thing?

H202

I just read that two uses of hydrogen peroxide are as the main ingredient in both teeth whitening strips and earwax removal treatments. Interesting.

Christmas was pretty good for the most part. We brought the cat along and he got quite pissy about the fact that he had to ride in the car. There are quite a few rips in Daniel’s leather jacket that were not there when he put it on that morning. We had lasagna at his mom’s house then visited various family and friends afterwards.

Dan’s friend came in from Vermont that night and they left today on a backpacking trip. It’s kind of weird because we haven’t really been apart yet for more than a day and they won’t be back until sometime Monday.

One of my presents this year was an electric guitar. It’ll be interesting to see if I have the patience to learn to play as previous attempts at instruments have failed due to a lack of it, a tendency towards perfectionism, and frustration when perfection isn’t attained.

I’m going to reintegrate site reviews into this site soon. Some upcoming projects are going to usurp a lot of my online time and I don’t have the interest to maintain a separate site.
