Failure Upon Failure

I completely and totally failed the NaBloPoMo challenge. I lasted maybe four or five days. It’s not that I didn’t have things to write about, I just didn’t write. *sigh*

Yet another example of today’s best and brightest and the completely brilliant questions they ask occurred yesterday. A student comes to the desk and asks while staring blankly at the sign that lists our hours: “What time do you close tonight?”

Head Meet Desk

Why is it so hard to understand that a library does not sell textbooks? We have a limited amount of textbooks that can be checked out for use in-house, but we do not sell them. At all. The only books we ever sell are ancient ones that have been weeded from the collection. Even after telling a student this, she still insisted on knowing how much she could buy it from us for.

What’s worse is that she called a few minutes before coming in, and was told by my co-worker that we do not sell them. I finally convinced her that the book she wanted was not for sale and pointed her in the direction of the bookstore.

This is not the first time such a thing has happened unfortunately. Usually it’s much earlier in the semester and they are not quite as persistent (read: oblivious). And these people are all college students…. *sigh*

Another Life Update

In list form because I’m lazy. Proper post later…

* Vegas was much fun. It was very nice to be able to have a drink after 1am….

* However, the people trying to rope you into timeshare presentations suck, and the ones with the cards for the hot barely legal ladies suck worse.

* Poker > Blackjack

* Met both Penn & Teller. Have pictures to prove this (next post).

* Busted a chick who stole approximately $800 worth of textbooks. All were science texts, only one wasn’t brand new. Lots of library excitement…

* Speaking of work, I’m now in charge of Lost and Found. What a bloody mess…

* Went a bit game crazy and bought Dynasty Warriors V, FF7: Dirge of Cerberus, Gran Turismo IV, Smackdown vs Raw 2008, Soulcaliber III, and preordered Guitar Hero World Tour (although I might delay getting it due to ridiculous cost).

* It snowed last weekend! I’m so not ready for cold weather…

* We have finished House Season One and have started season two. Love love love House. Especially latest episode. =)

* And most importantly, I finally finished The Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc by Mark Twain. It only took five months to slog through it. There’s some hope for me finishing the 28 in 2008 challenge after all…

Life Update?!?!

So I’ll be 21 in approximately an hour. I’ll report back on whatever big change that occurs at that moment that’ll make me competent enough to gamble legally, buy a drink at a bar, or go to a strip club. :)

To celebrate this lovely occasion the partner/friend/husband person and I will go to Vegas for a long weekend. The only thing on the itinerary is to see Penn & Teller live Saturday night. We’re in the “&” section, fourth row, center section. It should be pretty awesome.

Today was the pre-celebration which consisted of massages then a trip to the dollar movies to see Get Smart (finally! very funny movie). Then coming home to watch more House (we’re nearly through season one). Tomorrow there shall be more pampering and perhaps sushi, and possibly an introduction to the weirdness that is Utah’s private club membership system!

Saw my grandparents for the first time in a couple of years. They came up with my cousin who was evacuating from Hurricane Ike and stayed from Friday to Wednesday.

I’ve changed schedules several times since I posted about it. Currently I’m taking Human Growth and Development, Introduction to Chemistry, Computer Essentials, and starting at midterm, a class on artificial intelligence that looks interesting.

A former roommate apparently stole quite a few of our games, movies, and CDs while living with us, then lied about it, then changed his story several times. It took awhile to notice it because of the PS2 being broken for awhile. Nothing’s happening with it police-wise because games don’t have serial numbers and we don’t have receipts for these items we had for several years…

One final life-unrelated thing, Firefox’s spellchecker marked the word “about” as being spelled wrong. I right-clicked it and it offered the same correct spelling as a suggestion. So I clicked it to get the red line to go away and it replaces it with “aboutt” (and calls it correct!).

Requiem for a Console

After providing thousands of hours of entertainment, Playstation 2 S#…5016 was found on the living room floor of its home in Utah Saturday evening. It plunged to its death from the fireplace from which it resided after a small dog belonging to someone who was not a part of the household pulled it off. Attempts to revive it were unsuccessful.

It was adopted in August 2005 from a small pawn shop in Louisiana using funds from the first summer job its owner ever held. This job entailed long hours in a small cafe cooking and serving food to E.B. golfers for just above minimum wage at a rather high-end resort. Its life prior to its adoption is unknown. It was a loyal companion, accompanying its owner first to college, then across the country to Utah. The PS2 was survived by games from a variety of genres and accessories. It is accompanied in death by Guitar Hero III as it was with the console during its fatal plunge. Its disc has yet to be recovered. Both the console and the game will be sorely missed and will not be replaced for a long time as the family mourns (and attempts to save the money necessary for a replacement).

In Memoriam: Playstation 2. Sometime in 2003-August 9, 2008. :(
